The Grey Dwarves, or Duergar, are still a mystery to most of Known Alair; a boogeyman lurking below even the deepest delvings of their mountain kin. The few documented encounters with them record them as possesed of powerful psionic abilities, invariably insane to one degree or another, and inclined to really bad attitudes.
But in every people there are exceptions. When young Borax reached puberty (for dwarves, about 45 years), his parents realized that the emergence of his first psionic powers - and the mental damage that they brought - was absent. Most other peoples would perhaps care for an unfortunate offspring who was in some way handicapped, but Borax' parents were typical Duergar; themselves mentally warped by the powers that are the curse of their people, they could find no pity or patience for their misfit - sane - son.
Fleeing his home ahead of his father's wrath, Borax made his way to the surface, where it took him months to become accustomed to the sunlight. It took a very unpleasant encounter with ignorant humans to make him realize that his appearance was against him, and he took to dying his hair a more 'normal' black. From that day he hated humans with a passion. Ironically, it was a 'surface' dwarf that took him in, a glassblower named Drim son of Nalrim. Drim had no real need of an apprentice, but took the strange, withdrawn youth on as a forgehand. To his surprise Borax flourished in the role, and completed his apprenticeship and his journeyman's pieces.
He was studying for his mastery - and realizing that Drim's sons were beginning to look darkly at him as a threat to their inheritance of the business - when a gang of human bandits descended on the forge and killed Drim. Borax was away at the time, and as far as he knows the sons hid rather than defend their father, then accused him of being in league with them.
Borax left them to it, pursuing the bandits. He spent some time with a bounty hunter named Thracken, from whom he learned of the wild and the hunt. These skills led him to his quarry's lair, where he encountered a part-human woman named Ruby, there on a similar mission. The pair teamed up and wiped out the bandits.
Borax saw no reason to go back to his master's cold forge, and the partnership seemed to work pretty well, so they stuck together and struck out in search of adventure.
