The Wheldrake is a destroyer escort, designed for the same purposes as the smaller Chrysanthamum and Fer-de-lance. Its' primary armament consists of a 50-ton particle bay, which provides a very respectable punch for a 2,000-ton ship. The remainder of the armament is made up of turrets; mainly missile and laser, with a token sandcaster turret. Optimised screens allow it to scrape up a defence against heavy weapons. The omission of scoops, purifiers and avionics mean that this vessel is reliant on the fleet it accompanies for purified fuel. This has tended to prevent the design from migrating sideways to the piracy suppression role as the Chrysanthamum has done.
