The Atlantic class heavy cruiser is typical of Imperial designs for such ships; a long flattened structure studded with weaponry, flaring aft for rudimentary control surfaces useful in fuel skimming. Weel-armed and well-armoured, it fulfills the basic design requirement of meeting the enemy and winning in battle. The class, however, is fast approaching obsolescence and is not the equal of more modern vessels. The slight drive disadvantages are telling in otherwise equal engagements, and make the class inferior enough to affect strategic judgements concerning its commitment. An upgrade program to enhance the class was considered, but decided against because of cost, although a number of enhanced prototypes have been reported. This class of cruiser has lately proven popular with the Navy for independent missions, especially beyond the Imperial borders. Used alone, the ships are capable of a variety of diplomatic and scientific operations. Used in squadrons, they provide a useful show of force or reinforcement for friendly client states. The ship's cargo hold can be used to barrack 100 marines plus small vehicles for small commando operations, boarding parties and ship defence. Reportedly, some examples of the class have been fitted with black globes; this has not been confirmed. Atlantic class CRs have been produced by a variety of yards throughout the Imperium, including within the Marches. Ling Standard Products built four examples at Mora/Mora between 1020-1030. The last Atlantic ever produces first flew in 1050 at Deneb. A total of 794 ships were ultimately produced, of whic approximately 500 remain operational. Depending on progress of heavy ship construction, and on the region, the cruiser may be considered a first or second line ship. They are being phased into the second line as rapidly as newer vessels become available. Approximately 60 Atlantics have been transferred, sold or loaned to client states of the Imperium. Recepients include several Vargr nations along Corridor, Aslan colonial governments allied to or friendly with the Imperium and many local human worlds within the Imperial sphere.
