Kavan is a plague world. Forty years ago, at the height of a world war, Slyrroth, one of the local nations, achieved a breakthrough in biological warfare, and withoiut hesitation used the resulting weapon. Within days the disease they had created had run wild, wracking ever-increasing areas of the mainworld until finally the whole planet was affected. 99% of the human population died, along with every animal bigger than a rat. The barbaric survivors remain carriers of the plague - The Slyrroth Bane - and landings are forbidden. Few who are aware of the details have any desire to do so. Four cruisers from Talasol patrol the system to enforce this, and assignment to this duty - even though those involved never leave space for the entire hitch - is generally regarded as a punishment.
